The Scouting Family

The worldwide family of Scouts encompases all the five continents and all the world's major faiths and people. There are more than 28 million Scouts around the world, 500,000 of whom are in the United Kingdom. Scouting is a value-based, educational movement. It believes that the world is a better place when people:

  • are trustworthy, self-controlled and self-confident
  • have self-respect and respect for others
  • work together to serve other people and to improve society and
  • have an active faith

Because these principles are integral to Islam and analogous to its values, more than a third of Scouts in world are Muslim. Muslim Scouting in Britain and in the rest of Europe is a new phenomenon. It has developed in the last ten years to cater for the needs of a growing second and third generation Muslims. Muslim Scouting developed to help young Muslims achieve their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international community.

The Muslim Scout Fellowship

Muslim Scouting in the UK emerged in the late nineties. It developed from a few Muslim Scout Leaders who believed in the values of Scouting and who wanted the Muslim community to share in the benefits and fun of Scouting. In the last few years the idea of scouting has gained a lot of supporters in the Muslim community. The Muslim Scout Fellowship (MSF) is the United Kingdom's official body for Muslim adults who are active in Scouting. It is part of The Scout Association in the UK.

MSF aims:
  • To promote Scouting in the Muslim Community
  • To support Muslim Scout Groups and Muslim Scout Leaders
  • To be active in promoting the cultural diversity of The Scout Association
  • To take an active part in relevant national Scout Association's committees such as the Faiths & Beliefs Team and the Minority Support Team
  • To support the work of the National Adviser for spiritual Development particulary in creating programme ideas and resources
  • To be first point of contact for issues concerning Muslims in Scouting

Achievements:
  • 16 Muslim Scout Groups created so far
  • Regular Scout Leader training camps (over 10 so far) organised with more than 300 potential Muslim Leaders attending (male and female)
  • Production and approval (by Islamic Authorities) of "Muslims in Scouting" factsheet to be a guide for Muslim and non-Muslim Scouts
  • Production of a guide on "How to start a Scout Group"
  • Active participation in the Minority Support Team
  • Membership of the Faiths and Beliefs Team
  • Main contact for the International Union of Muslim Scouts

Our targets for 2012:

To have 15,000 Muslim Scouts by 2012. This would make The Scout Association representative of the wider society. (Muslims make 3% of the UK population)
